Problem Awareness

A recent article in the Monroe Journal opened the eyes of some of the citizens who read it about another long time issue in our area. That issue being probed was dog fighting.

One has to only get out and make the rounds in our area to see that this takes place. The article said that it is a felony to own, fight, or even be at one of these events as a spectator.

One has to only type the words dog fighting into Google to understand that this is not only an issue in Monroe County and the surrounding area but of world wide proportions. One of the very first things to pop up when I did this was pictures of dogs fighting in Afghanistan.

This is all very interesting to me. As I was reading this article I wondered how many dogs there were in our area that lost their lives in this last year while being involved in this sport or whatever you would choose to call it? How many cats or inferior dogs lost their lives while being involved in the training process?

Awareness is being raised as national media attention was spotlighted on quarterback Michael Vick and his involvement of dog fighting.

This is all well and good for many it is a problem that needs to be dealt with. However, as I was asking myself the questions about the numbers of the dog fighting my mind shifted to how many deaths occurred elsewhere.

During the last year it would be interesting to me how many children have been murdered from people right here in Monroe County through legalized abortion? I would imagine that the number would be higher than one would think. On one website the latest year it gave a statistic for in Monroe County Alabama was 2004 and the number given was 28.

Now I have a problem understanding all of this but I find it a little odd that the nation as a whole sits silent on this issue when it can get so excited about dogs fighting. Would that not signal some mixed priorities somewhere? The truth of the matter is, we have more children murdered in America every day of the week than we had people murdered by the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001 and nobody seems to notice.

National and media headlines are made daily calling attention to animals and their plight and thousands scream about the plight of euthanasia of these animals. The world immediately falls silent on the murder of these babies however. The dogs and cats that are euthanized are given a shot and put to sleep. The babies that are aborted are torn apart alive before they are taken out. Those that are delivered partial birth are actually partially delivered and then have something stuck in the back of their heads and their brains sucked out.

How did we as a nation ever sink to this low, and how can we as a nation remain at this low? There has to be something done about this.

The sad thing is that until the hearts and the minds of the people are changed both abortion and dog fighting  will continue to go on.
